Yesterday, I took my girls—retired guide dog Willow and working guide dog Janey out for a walk. We went to a local nature reserve, where there is a path that makes the route accessible.

The walk is just over a mile long, making it ideal for an afternoon and it conveniently ends at a pub. After soaking up the fresh air and scenery, we stopped there for a well-earned drink, rounding off a really lovely afternoon together along with my partner.

The rest of the day was uneventful, I made some food and we started to catch up on some tv. The dogs snoozed in their beds after their feeding, everything seemed normal.

We had almost finished our show, when my partner noticed Janey making jerky head movements. It was very strange and out of character, and when it didn’t stop after about half an hour, we called guide dogs.

I called the emergency line for Guide dog support and we all suspected she had eaten something on our earlier walk. Most likely cannabis. So at 8pm on a Saturday night we took an emergency trip to the vets.

The vet we saw was lovely, she agreed with the conclusion we got to. The treatment, thankfully was simple. IV fluids overnight, something to help her relax and a charcoal solution to soak up the toxins. But this would mean an overnight stay at the vetenary hospital. Thankfully I brought a blanket with us just in case. So after her cannula was put in we said our goodbyes.

This morning we waited for the call to say we could collect her. Thankfully it didn’t take long. She had a very good night and we just couldn’t wait to get her home.

This evening has been quiet. She’s very tired, but she’s very glad to me home, occasionally popping out of her bed to have a little fuss.

My poor precious girl had a very eventful weekend. At least she’s home and safe now.

The video shows Janey lying in her bed on her side. Her head is jerking and trekking. Her eyes are open.
